Remember the Accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. During This Celebration

Join the community at Atlanta History Center in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day! On Monday, January 20th, Atlanta History Center will offer free admission to their original location and the Midtown branch, as well as special programming focusing on the many contributions of African Americans to the Atlanta community and beyond.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, held on January 20th, is a day of service that celebrates the civil rights leader’s life and legacy. MLK Day was designed to honor the activist and minister assassinated in 1968, whose accomplishments have continued to inspire generations of Americans. Though Martin Luther King, Jr. accomplished many things throughout his lifetime, he is most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport and for racial equality in the United States.

This special community day at the Atlanta History Center includes programming highlighting the contributions and stories of African Americans in Atlanta. Guests will enjoy immersive theatre performances and inspiring activities for all ages. These highlights include a screening of Frederick Lewis’ documentary “Paul Laurence Dunbar: Beyond the Mask,” which is about the life and legacy of the first African American writer to achieve national and international fame. This screening will be followed by a conversation with the filmmaker.

Another highlight is a talk by Adam Parker, author of “Outside Agitator: The Civil Rights Struggle of Cleveland Sellers Jr.” Fifty years ago, Sellers, the program director of Atlanta's Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, was the scapegoat for the Orangeburg Massacre in South Carolina, one of the bloodiest civil rights events of the 1960s. Sellers served time for the incident, was eventually pardoned, and went on to become a college president. Sellers will be joining the author for this talk.
